The book is dedicated to the uniform, equipment and armament of the Russian Navy from the reign of emperors Alexander III and Nicholas II, as well as the period of the Provisional Government, that is, from March 1881 to October 1917, the fleet has very actively developed in the indicated era, which entailed behind Different organizational and staffing innovations. In accordance with the tasks performed, the division of warships into classes changed, the organizational and staff structure was reformed, an underwater fleet and naval aviation occurred. The number of technical specialists in the fleet was constantly growing, and their functions became more and more diverse. Entire categories of naval officials appeared, such as fleet conductors and ship"s midshipmen. The corps of the marine department and the military education system were repeatedly reformed. All this had a significant impact on the uniforms and insignia of the military sailors who changed and complemented in accordance with the requirements of the time.
This book is the first printed work in Russia, where the evolution of the Russian naval form of the times of Alexander III, Nicholas II and the Provisional Government is considered in detail. It is a logical continuation of the book "Uniform of the Russian Navy. 1855-1881 ", from which the principle of structural construction inherited. The book is divided into a common part, which discusses changes in the form of uniforms belonging to all or a significant part of military sailors, and chapters on private changes in their various categories (admirals, the ranks of the imperial retinue, naval crews, educational institutions, etc) . Due to the large amount of information, the book is divided into two volumes. The first volume includes the general changes in the form of uniforms, as well as the form of admirals and generals of the naval department, the sea ranks of the imperial retinue, officers of the Ministry of the Maritime, Adjutants, the ranks of the guards and naval crews.
When writing a book, both published sources (regulatory documents of the naval department, reference literature of that time) and archival materials were widely used. As illustrations, graphic documents from archival funds, historical photo documents of the late XIX - early XX century, as well as photographs of genuine naval items from domestic and foreign museum and private collections were used. A significant part of the information given in the book is published for the first time.
