On March 20, 1911, thirteen -year -old Andrei Yushchinsky was found stabbed on the outskirts of Kyiv. Four months later, the police arrested Mendel Beilis, a thirty -seven -year -old father of five children who worked as a clerk at a brick factory nearby. There was no evidence of Beilis’s involvement in the murder, the main prosecutor was a suspect of the murder, and the accusation itself was based on the so -called “bloody test” - a folklore plot, according to which Jews use Christians" blood for ritual purposes. Russian society, which was then on the verge of a historical disaster, split into those who proved the innocence of Beilis, and those who sought to make this case a reason for large -scale anti -Semitic campaigns. The state accusation caused protests around the world, Thomas Mann, Herbert Wells, Anatole France, Arthur Conan Doyle, Archbishop of Canterbury and Jane Addams were in defense of Bailis. The author - American journalist and producer Edmund Levin - was one of the first to turn to the case file and told a story in detail that became a symbol and a formidable warning about the frightening force and the survivability of lies
