This work presents a voluminous and unique historical study in terms of the history of the most prestigious and knightly weapons of medieval Rus" - Romanesque swords of pan -European types. The great researcher of Old Russian military affairs A. N. Kirpichnikov initiated such studies more than half a century ago, specializing mainly in the swords of the early Middle Ages from the funeral inventory of pagan squads of the mounds. At the same time, the study of weapons from the time of the High and Late Middle Ages (XIII-XVI centuries) due to extremely rare, scattered and random finds was viewed in nature, which gave an occasion to take up an erroneous version about borrowing eastern weapons with a massive transition to the saber immediately after Mongol invasion.
presented in the first volume of this work, research, archaeological, visual material, analysis of the ratio of swords and sabers, a detailed riding catalog convincingly show that the Russian heavily armed horse rider represented a complete analogue of the Western European knight and, having similar weapons, used the same heavy European Tactics of battle.
In the second volume, finds of swords, localized or associated with Russian lands in the described era, will be presented.
Work is illustrated by the richest and colorful illustrative material, both historical and completed by the author himself, which makes it possible to detailed familiarization with the results of research by both specialists and a wide range of readers
