Svetlana. The cultural history of the name

The name Svetlana has an amazing cultural story: it was not included in the holy and did not meet in the monuments of ancient Russian writing, but it became part of the Russian Onomasticon thanks to the famous Ballad of Vasily Zhukovsky. Elena Dushechkina traces his path from the classical poetic text of the beginning of the 19th century to incredible popularity in Soviet times, when it suddenly included in the list of new names of "ideological sound". Having described in detail the history of the creation of Zhukovsky’s ballad and the literary fate of its central image, the author turns to the history of Svetlana in the 20th century, attracting an extensive material, including anthroponymic studies, as well as an interview with its carriers.
