The monograph is devoted to the analysis of sociocultural processes in the Russian village in the period after the abolition of serfdom and before the outbreak of the First World War. Based on the study of archival materials of the Moscow, Vladimir and Tver provinces of the Central-Industrial region, many of which are first introduced into scientific circulation, the author reveals two interconnected, but in many ways, contradicting the trends, one of which was associated with the preservation and strengthening of existing traditions , and the other led to the breakdown of traditional peasant culture and the emergence of elements of a new, mass culture in the village. The influence of modernization factors on the moral attitudes and social representations of the peasants, a change in the attitude of the peasants to education, the evolution of cultural needs and their self -identification by Russian society are revealed.
