The monograph presents the history of the emergence and development of mass culture in Russia from ancient times to the beginning of the twentieth century. The author explores the origins of mass culture, which are rooted in ancient times, shows that the Russian mass culture receives the impulse of independence with the allocation of a personal principle and the formation of a personified culture in the 17th century, and the contrast of the mass -shaped baroque is spilled into the formation of two paradigms - the previgns and pre -ceremonies, which are poured out, which anticipate the formation of mass and elitist cultures back in pre -Petrine and post -Petrine Russia. The author notes that in the framework of the education there was a demarcation of the noble culture on liberal-democratic and conservative varieties, and if the first contributed to the mass-support, the second-the individualization of Russian culture. The crisis of the classical paradigm that occurred in the 19th century, and with it, “literary centrism” of Russian culture, led to the formation of post -literary genres and styles associated with modernism and postmodernism, to renewing the content and artistic means of both mass and elitist culture of the early twentieth century.
