The monograph is devoted to the activities of the departments of Russian history of Moscow and St. Petersburg universities in the second half of the XIX - early XX centuries. The presentation of the material is subject to the tasks of determining the contribution of scientists to the source, thematic, conceptual enrichment of the subject. The problem of changing generations in science was solved by the author on the basis of a comparative analysis of the creativity and personal relations of contemporaries of "great reforms" (S. M. Soloviev), "Semi-Semi-Years" (K. N. Bestuzhev-Ryumin, V.O. Klyuchevsky, S.F. Platonov) and scientists of the turn of the XIX-XX centuries (P. N. Milyukov, M.K. Lubavsky, A. S. Lappo-Danilevsky, A. E. Presnyakov and others) The result of the consideration of these problems was the periodization of the domestic historical process, the determination of the place of researchers within the framework of directions, trends and schools that prevailed in the science of that time.
