In 1769, two squadrons of the Baltic Fleet of the Russian Empire went from Kronstadt around the whole of Europe to the East Mediterranean. This expedition - the first military campaign of Russia in the Mediterranean Sea - was a big surprise for the Ottoman Empire, which entered the next Russian -Turkish war. One of the squadron was commanded by Scot John Elphinston (1722-1785), who had just accepted for the Russian service in the rank of Rear Admiral. In 2003, the University of Princeton"s library acquired a collection of papers of Elfinston and his sons, among which there was a unique memoir certificate of the events of that expedition. The author of the "narrative" compares the Russian and British fleet, describes stops in different cities of Europe, shares his impressions of meetings with Catherine II, Paul I and outstanding figures of that era, quotes their letters, many of which are published for the first time. Translation, research and comments on the narrative was performed by the professor of the Higher School of Economics and Elena Smilyanskaya and teacher of the University of Exterter (Great Britain) Dr. Julia Leikin
