The Danube principalities, Moldova and Wallachia, were the main arena of the struggle between the Russian and Ottoman Empires in the 19th century. Victor’s book is still devoted to the tense relations of Russian diplomats and military with Danube boyars. Representatives of Russia sought to turn the principalities into a controlled buffer zone, then how to know Moldova and Wallachia took care of preserving their traditional autonomy. These conflicting interests were superimposed both the growing struggle of Russia with other powers of Europe for influence in the European part of the Ottoman Empire, and the origin of Romanian nationalism. In his study, the author considers in detail the main results of these multidirectional political vectors-reforms of the 1820-1830s, which significantly modernized the political and administrative institutions of the Danube principalities and laid the foundations of the future Romanian national state. Victor teaches at the University of Concordia (Edmonton, Canada)
