The monograph considers the origin and subsequent development of the social movement in Russia as a new phenomenon in the history of the country, which we can talk about at the very beginning of the 19th century. A significant place in it is given the historiography of the social movement, the contribution is shown to the development of this research issue in pre -revolutionary, Soviet and modern Russian literature. Three main socio -political directions are thoroughly investigated, which were revealed in Russia under Alexander I - liberal, conservative and left - radical. The peculiarity of each of these areas, their personnel composition and ideological attitudes are shown. Their main printed organs, circles and organizations are dismantled. Particular attention is paid to the leaders of these areas, but the activities of those supporters who lived in the Russian province are also considered. The author attracted significant published literature and sources, and archival materials are also widely used.
