The monograph examines the evolution of theoretical ideas about the “nation” and “national state” in the history of European philosophy and the science of the XVIII-XX centuries, the philosophical foundations and research paradigms of the modern concepts of the essence, origin and evolution of nations and national states are revealed, and their Methodological advantages and disadvantages. The paths of the formation of national states and their transformations into colonial empires, the process of decolonization and the emergence of new national and pseudonational states in the second half of the 20th century, the new functions of national states in the modern world and the prospects of Russia to become a “national state” are analyzed.
