“The Basic concepts of the history of art” are one of the main works of Velflin, first published in 1915 and still regularly transformed in all leading languages of the world, since it is important for students, art historians and simply people interested in theory and history of arts, cannot be overestimated.
In this work, which has become a kind of “sacred book” of the formal method in art criticism, the author proposes and describes his theory “art without a name” - a theory requiring the study of works of art “outside the personalities”, in a complete separation from their names and personalities authors.
For a traditional art history, not least based precisely on the connection of the biography of the Creator with his individual “creative handwriting”, Welflin"s work was shocked and almost slap in the face. However, subsequently, it formed the basis of a different, more general and large -scale scientific view, without which it would be impossible to imagine a contemporary art history and the history of art
