The study of the sociocultural history of translation and translation practices opens up new prospects in the study of the intellectual spheres of the past. How did a person comprehend society in different eras? How did cultures interacted in the process of exchanging ideas? How were new systems of concepts and representations that determined the development of Russian culture in modern times? The purpose of this publication is to explore the transfer, adapt and reception of basic European political ideas in Russia of the XVIII century through the prism of translations of socio-political texts. The authors consider the translation as a “laboratory”, where concepts have gained their specific significance in specific social and historical contexts. The book is divided into three thematic blocks, in which the transfer/translation of individual political concepts (“despotism”, “state”, “society”, “people”, “nation”, etc), speech practices of understanding politics are studied (“medical discourse” , “Monarchical language”), the principles of translating individual fundamental texts and the role of translators in the creation of a new socio-political terminology
