The collection is dedicated to the daily life of Khitrovskaya Square and its environs at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. This place was considered a "bottom" of Moscow because of the inhabitants of the cunning market and nearby nightlife. Gilyarovsky, perpetuating the Khitrovka in Moscow and Muscovites, has repeatedly been there in search of plots for his reports, and also accompanied Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko, who sought nature for staging the play of Gorky "at the bottom". Finally, under the impression of Khitrovka and a number of Moscow overnight stays, Leo Tolstoy wrote one of his most important journalistic articles "So what should we do."
In addition to the stories of Gilyarovsky and the fragment of this article by Tolstoy, the book of Villiam "Khitrovsky album", which has not been reprinted since 1909, was also included in the collection. It presents two dozen portraits of people, for one reason or another in the cunning overnight stays
