Interpretation of dreams in folk culture

What is common between the plots of dreams about a torn apple and the destroyed wall of the house? Why is the cracked ice perceive as a good sign, and the flowering of the tree is meaningful as a harbinger of the death of the owners of the garden? Analyzing their own field materials (records of interviews conducted in the Poltava region of Ukraine in 2012–2018), archival data and other sources, the author first identifies and describes stable narrative schemes characteristic of stories about prophetic dreams. Numerous examples show how, through the laws of explanation of different subjects, the general logic of interpretation of dreams is visible.
The result of the work was a pointer in which the discovered interpretation models are streamlined and options for their implementation in personal narratives about prophetic dreams recorded among the East Slavic population over the past century are given.
