The book of the famous philologist and historian, professor of the European University Institute in Florence Alexander Etkinda talks about how the Russian Empire mastered foreign territories and mastered its own lands, colonizing many peoples, including the Russians themselves. Etkind speaks in detail about the boundaries of the application of the Western concepts of colonialism and orientalism to Russian culture, the formation of the language of self-colonization among Russian historians, on serfdom and peasant community as colonial institutions, about literature attempts to resolve the problems of internal colonization posed by Russian history. Moving from history to literature and vice versa, Etkind gives unexpected interpretations of critical texts about imperial experience, the authors of which were Defoe and Tolstoy, Gogol and Conrad, Kant and Bakhtin.
