The plunder of invaluable works of art in wartime is a well -developed topic of research and journalism. Bozhena Schellcoss focuses on a close, but not identical question: the meaning of “ordinary” objects - pots, glasses, shoes, clothes, kitchen utensils - material residues of the once lived reality, which the author reads as cultural texts. Shellcoss describes the methods of representing the objects of the Holocaust in Polish and Polish-Jewish texts, written during or shortly after the Second World War. The material of the study was the works of Zuzanne Ginchanka, Vladislav Schlengel, Zofia Nalkovskaya, Cheslav Milos, hedgehogs of Andzheevsky and Tadeusz Borovsky. Combining attentive reading of chosen texts with a critical analysis of various philosophical and theoretical approaches to the nature of matter, the study of shelross expands the modern discourse about the Holocaust, covering how modest, usually overlooked objects of material culture in the perception of writers
