Mikhail Mikhailovich Shcherbatov (1733 -1790) - prince, politician, publicist, historian, philosopher, economist, for his time - a person of truly encyclopedic knowledge. Honorary member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1776), member of the Russian Academy (1783) Senator, valid secret adviser (1786) Shcherbatov’s ancestors go back to the Rurikovich dynasty, Mikhail represented him with the 27th knee. In 1771, Shcherbatov became a court heraldmaster. Catherine II appointed him the first Russian historiographer (the second was Nikolai Karamzin), on behalf of Empress Shcherbatov, he dismantled the archives of Russia. This work led him to the creation of the main work of life - "Russian history from ancient times" (printed since 1770 for more than twenty years) In total, seven volumes were published in fifteen books, covering the period before the reign of Mikhail Romanov (1610) Most of the documents used by Shcherbatov to write "history" unfortunately have not been preserved to this day.
