The book continues a series of collective monographs “Essays on Russian Culture” dedicated to the 19th century (in 6 volumes. M., 1998–2005) and the frontier of the 19th -20th centuries (vol. 1-3. M., 2011, 2016) It is dedicated to the era of the First World War. The task of the project is an attempt to present the sociocultural section of the life of Russian society in the war years in its fullness and diversity. The study is distinguished by the complexity of the approach, the presence of through stories and mutual references inside the text of the essays. The authors tried to show that the war did not interrupt the processes in public, sociocultural and everyday life. But she created a qualitatively new reality and, accordingly, a new understanding and a sense of events in socio-cultural life. Both the creators of culture and its recipients first encountered the events of such a duration and mass. The further development of socio-cultural life not only continued the processes stopped by the First World War, it summed up and used the experience of the war years
