This manual is intended for a wide range of readers, primarily for those who are interested in the English language and culture of Great Britain and the USA. The focus is in national irony and humor, with their features, subtleties and patterns. These phenomena are considered in the context of cultural traditions and communicative values that are of paramount importance for the formation of a national mentality. The manual gives answers to the questions: what are they joking about, what the British and Americans are ironic over? What is the peculiarity of their humor / irony? Why do humor / irony have such characteristics? How to learn to understand English irony / humor and react correctly to them? The proposed theoretical part is illustrated by examples from modern English discourse (the cycle of British and American programs “Interview with the Stars”), as well as examples from classical and modern literature. In addition to the theoretical part, the manual proposes a number of questions and exercises for independent work. All questions and exercises are equipped with keys. The manual will allow readers to understand the mechanisms and patterns of English irony and humor, will teach to correctly interpret jokes, and also open a rich English ironic picture of the world.
