The monograph is dedicated to the dissertation culture of Russian universities of the XIX - early XX century. as a phenomenon of scientific life of corporation scientists-historians. For the first time in historiographic practice, the book presents an analysis of the database about 280 dissertations and 409 dissertations of historians of Russian universities. The structural parts of the monographs are devoted to the attention of researchers to the plots (in particular, the interpretation of Russian legislation, which determined the status of a dissertation as scientific work, the regulatory rules of its presentation in the form of a dissertation dispute), and still poorly studied aspects.
For the first time, a wide historical and scientific cloth of the studied experiments of the creation of dissertations, the traditions of the organization of dissertation disputes are presented, the practices and culture of opposing dissertations are analyzed. The Institute of Opponents is presented in the monograph as the most important actor of the dissertation culture. The authors trace the path of historians to create a dissertation research, turn to the analysis of dissertations in the desire to determine theoretical and methodological principles and historiographic passages of dissertations. The experience of studying assessments and self -assertion of dissertations by contemporaries in sources of personal origin is proposed.
A special aspect was the study of the specifics of commemorations regarding the most famous dissertation works.
