Richard Unger is a media historian, professor at the University of British Colombia in Canada.
The book “Beer in the Middle Ages” is devoted to the history and development of brewing in medieval and renaissance Europe. In the era of fierce wars and crusades, beer was part of everyday life and a drink for people of all ages and social groups: it was drank at almost any time of the day or night. In the early new time, a foamy drink, which was first cooked at home, became an export product and fell under the protection of the state. European kings and lords tried in every possible way to control the trade in beer, and ordinary people - to earn money on the preparation and sale of a hop drink. Surprisingly, monasteries played a special role in the formation of medieval brewing: thanks to the use of quality devices, inaccessible to the poor inhabitants of villages and cities, the monks managed to significantly develop the brewing industry. It was without reason that St. Patrick, the Baptist of Ireland, had a personal priest-pivovar.
The publication will be interesting to historians, culturalists, as well as a wide range of readers interested in the Middle Ages
