The monograph studies the pre -revolutionary and post -revolutionary legislation of Russia, the legislation of a number of foreign countries, including the former socialist space. The types of punishments are considered that could be appointed for committing crimes at different stages of development of the Russian state, as well as existing abroad. The formation of a system of punishment in its modern sense is studied, the trends in the construction of a criminal punishment system in the history of Russia and in foreign criminal legislation are being studied. The author makes specific recommendations regarding the possible use of historical and foreign experience in further improving the Russian system of criminal punishments.
