This novel was conceived by Dostoevsky as a "psychological account of a crime," but in the process it turned into a grand philosophical exploration of faith, conscience, responsibility towards others, sin, and redemption. "Am I a trembling creature, or do I have the right?" - the question of the main character, addressed to himself and all of humanity. And where is that limit of what is permissible, beyond which there is no return from the "hideous dream" that has taken hold of Raskolnikov's mind?
