Count Savva Lukich Raguzinsky undeservedly forgotten by our contemporaries. Meanwhile, he was one of the closest associates of Peter the Great: a diplomat, spy, economist, talented entrepreneur who did a lot for Russia and for St. Petersburg in particular.
His real name is Sava Vladislavich. An Orthodox Serb, born in 1660 (or 1668), he was forced to flee with his family from the Turkish janissaries to Dubrovnik at the end of the 17th century (hence his pseudonym - Raguzinsky, because Dubrovnik was called Ragusa at that time). Having received excellent education in Dubrovnik, Italy, and France, he organized his own trading company in Constantinople and soon offered his services to the Russian embassy, providing them with texts of secret treaties between Turkey and Western European countries...
