In the story of the Cossacks, they reflected the impressions of Tolstoy from his three-year service in the Caucasus. In 1851, he went there for her older brother Nikolai, an officer of the army, and lived almost three years in the Cossack village on the banks of the Terek. The Cossacks are rightly called the main work of L.N. Tolstoy 1850s, over which he worked with breaks, 10 years (1853-1863) The main character of the story, Dmitry Olenin, is close to the author and on spiritual experience, and according to moral aspirations. Like Tolstoy, it turns out to be in the Caucasus in an attempt to start a new life, in which there will no longer be more mistakes, there will be no repentance, and probably one happiness will be. But instead of imaginary on the way to the Caucasus of paintings in the spirit of Russian romantic literature, the hero of the story had to see a real life and to feel someone else"s untouched by the civilization of the world
