Readers are offered a book by the renowned domestic literary critic and literary historian F.G. de La Barta (1870--1915), dedicated to the study of literary creation during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The main goal of the author is to refute the entrenched opinion that medieval literature, like culture as a whole, was permeated with asceticism, and to show its connection with the literary currents of the Renaissance era. The book consists of two parts, or sections. The first part provides a brief characterization of the main currents of medieval literature, examines Christian Latin literature, traces the emergence of literature in vernacular languages and its gradual merger with book literature, and touches upon the history of medieval theater in connection with its influence on the English drama of the 16th century. The second part of the book is devoted to the development of the most important literary currents of the Renaissance era. It gives a brief characterization of the Renaissance and describes the formation of a new ideal, studies the Renaissance in Italy, France, and England. The last chapters of the book are dedicated to the emergence and development of new drama.
