'Conversations about Life. How We and the Life Around Us Are Organized' - a series of interviews with leading experts in the field of life sciences. The new edition serves as a continuation of the Skoltech book series, which includes 'Mathematical Walks' and 'Mathematical Walks+' (2017, 2022), 'It is Physically Possible' (2020). The third book became a beautiful culmination of a large media project implemented by the institute in collaboration with the Russian Science Foundation.
The new edition opens with a message to the reader from the rector of Skoltech, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Alexander Kuleshov: ''Conversations about Life' is the largest of the three books. We have been talking to the authors for two years, and from these conversations we have compiled a book that includes interviews with both masters and successful young scientists, as biology is a rapidly developing science, largely a science of the young. Initially, we wanted to make these books interesting not only for specialists, but also for a wide range of readers, including those who are quite far from science. In my opinion, when reading these interviews, you first and foremost see the author, understand (or think you understand) how they think, how ideas come to them, what it is like to work in science, the relationships between people in science, and their understanding of their mission'.
Some of the heroes of the media project study marine polychaete worms, some study the mechanisms of packaging a one-and-a-half-meter DNA molecule into a microscopic cell nucleus, and some search for new approaches to the treatment of oncological diseases and practice medicine - a total of 38 interviews and 2 photo reports are included in the book.
The book is illustrated with wonderful photos and contains an Index of Names.
