Book Conquest of the continent. The intersections of the cultural traditions of the philologist, the famous theater, Yu.I. Kagarlitsky devotes to one of the fierce disputes in the history of the world theater. The author showed the heterogeneity and conflict of educational culture on the example of Voltaire"s dispute with Shakespeare. In the course of it, the historical and aesthetic boundaries of classicism were determined, and the meaning of Shakespeare for Europe was revealed. But it took Voltaire"s huge authority so that Shakespeare won the European continent.
This book is not only and not so much about Shakespeare. She is about the European theatrical culture of the three centuries, represented as a holistic dynamic artistic process in the unity and variety of trends characteristic of England, Germany, France, Italy, Russia at the time of their convergence. The author draws attention to those worldview and professional problems of the Enlightenment of the Enlightenment, which were in the focus of the modern theater and wider - artistic culture. The book does not have a distinguished theoretical nature. It investigates the very texture of the theater not only at different stages of drama and theater of the XVIII century. different countries, but their origins and further fate in the XIX and XX centuries, when the idea of the universe changed, and the theater was surrounded by other arts in the new social and political reality.
