This book is not a settling of scores. The author was more interested in showing that the collapse of the Soviet Union was not only, and judging by the facts, not so much due to imperatives that paralyzed the reflexes of national self-preservation, but rather due to the specifics of the power structures and personal qualities inherent in the last leaders of the USSR. At each stage of perestroika, there were options, there was a choice. However, the right to make the final decision belonged solely to M.S. Gorbachev. He did not share this right with anyone - neither with the parliament, nor with the government, nor with colleagues in the Politburo of the party, nor with the party as an institution. By assuming the presidency, M.S. Gorbachev even elevated himself above the Constitution and the will of the people expressed in the all-Union referendum. If we do not dwell on the form - it could have been velvet - the last Soviet leader did not budge an inch from authoritarianism. On the contrary, under him, authoritarianism flourished in its most blatant form.
