Few child heroes in world history have managed to acquire such a bad reputation as Pavlik Morozov. However, all materials about the life of this hero are subject to doubt, including the official 'Case of the Murder of the Morozov Brothers' compiled by the OGPU. It is possible that there wasn't even the famous denunciation of the father, and the reasons for the murder of Pavlik and his brother Fyodor were more likely of a domestic rather than political nature. One of the main tasks of this book is to place the figure of Pavlik Morozov in the context of the historical process, particularly in the history of the collectivization of the Ural village in the early 1930s. Examining the evolution of the legend of his 'feat' from September 1932 until the late 1980s helps to form an understanding of how cults of Soviet heroes were created.
