A monograph, created on a vast, until that time not introduced into scientific use, material, is dedicated to the Western European romantic ballet of the 19th century as an integral phenomenon. Its four parts are devoted to the literary basis of the performance, and its musical side, and the features of the production, and the problem of understanding the work.
In the study, the line of the gradual transformation of the ballet libretto as a literary genre (from the occurrence of ballet in the 16th century - by the nineteenth century) was first traced and the typology of its characters is presented. For the first time, the features of the musical drama of ballet science as a symphonic work were analyzed. The author turns to the features of the scenography and costumes of the romantic ballet in their historical perspective and in connection with the features of the libretto of the performance. In the monograph, the reader for the first time is given the opportunity to get acquainted with numerous critical octars on performances created by both contemporaries of productions and our contemporaries. The attention of the romantic ballet on the life of a society that comes at many levels is also paid to the influence of home music to a change in the tradition of public behavior in the theater.
In addition, the author gives the reader the opportunity to get acquainted with some genuine libretto of romantic ballets, most of which are first printed in translation into Russian.
