Here is a unique book - the first labor in Russia, dedicated to the history of European and Russian ballet. It was written in the 80s of the XIX century by Konstantin Apollonovich Skalkovsky (1843-1906)- a statesman, writer and a big expert in ballet. It was this book that became the basis and model for all subsequent works of famous Russian historians.
Ballet grew out of pantomime and street musical performances. The invention of the ballet is attributed to the Romans, then the ballet was forgotten for a long time, but in the era of the Renaissance he stepped from the streets to the palace halls. And the French king Louis XIV even received the nickname King Sun, dancing this role in one of the productions in Versailles.
The rapid development of ballet began in France in the XVIII century, from there it spread throughout Europe, gradually reaching Russia, which, starting with imitation of Western patterns, created its own ballet school, which conquered the world in just a few decades.
The book is illustrated by works of world painting and rare photographs
