The publication was carried out as part of the joint publishing program of the Museum of Modern Art "Garage" and Artguide Editions. One of the leading historians and theorists of modern dance Sally Baines gives an overview of the emergence and development of the postmodern dance in America in the 1960-1970s. The book tells about the work of ten leading choreographers and dancers of this direction - in particular Trisha Brown, Ivonn Rainer, Steve Pacoston and Meredith Monk, as well as Grand Union improvisation groups. Baines describes in detail the key productions of choreographers, analyzes their styles, techniques and ideas, explains why they made a real revolution in the world of dance
