Merce Cunningham is an American dancer and choreographer, a student of Martha Graham, a close friend and many years of creative partner of composer John Cage, a man who was always moving against the current. This “against” applied to both the classic ballet and the Modern dance, which managed to turn into a “tradition” in the era of the heyday of Cunningham"s work. Violating the usual beliefs and rules, Cunningham has become a master: the style of his dance amazes with the novelty. To the life and work of the American master, his favorite description from the “commemoration of Finnegan” is quite applied: he became “smooth”, brilliant and perfect, because he was “uneven”, “ruff”.
A book built in the form of a Canningham interview with a French journalist Jacqueline Leshev, who is divided in an interview with a French journalist, talks in detail about the life of a dancer, about his special understanding of the dance, stages of honing his unusual creative method during the creation of ballets.
