In modern society, where information technologies and communications play an increasing role, the theory of information becomes a necessary component of education and mathematicians, and physicists, and programmers, and engineers. The textbook is devoted to the basics of classical theory of information. The first chapters contain basic theoretical provisions. The following are the applications of the theory of information to the tasks of encoding and transmitting information. The presentation is carried out at the most accessible level with an abundance of examples and a detailed analysis of tasks, so the book will be useful to a wide circle of students of physical, mathematical and technical profiles. It is also useful to teachers, especially the second half, where a set of control tasks (20 options) containing control questions on the theory and collection of tasks is presented. There have been no such volumetric sets of control tasks on the theory of information in the literature to date. It is possible to use the manual for self -education, because only basic knowledge on probability theory and analysis is enough to work with it
