The English collection of short prose by Vladimir Nabokov (1899–1977), released by the writer's son in 1995, is well known in the West. However, in Russian, the language in which Nabokov wrote most of his stories, the book was not published for a long time. Thanks to the years of work by researchers, the volume compiled by Dmitri Nabokov was supplemented with new works, resulting in more than sixty stories written by Nabokov between 1920–1951 in European emigration and in America being collected under one cover by 2008. In addition to well-known works, this complete collection of stories presents rare early compositions, as well as prefaces and notes by Nabokov from English collections. The Appendix publishes compositions that were not included in previous collections of stories. The edition is equipped with a foreword and notes by D. Nabokov, and a significant amount of information can also be found in the comments of the editor and compiler of the collection, Andrey Babikov. The English stories are printed in the translation by Gennady Barabtarlo, prepared with the participation of Vera Nabokova. The peculiarities of the translator's orthography, punctuation, and transliteration are preserved.
