In the book "Communism as Reality" (1980), the world's leading Sovietologist A.A. Zinoviev, for the first time in history, subjects the Soviet system to scientific analysis as a practical embodiment of communism. The author of the book develops a theory of communism based on observation of the facts of Soviet reality, rather than what should have been or would have been desired, applying his developed method of understanding, describing, and explaining social phenomena that meets the requirements of scientific rigor. The conclusions reached by the scientist are paradoxical: on the one hand, real communism is a society far from perfection, and on the other hand, it in many ways surpasses Westernism. The Soviet period represented the highest point in the history of Russia. A testament to the recognition of A.A. Zinoviev's intellectual achievements in the book "Communism as Reality" was his award of the prestigious Alexis de Tocqueville Prize in 1982, of which he remains the only Russian laureate to this day. In the work "The Crisis of Communism" (1990), A.A. Zinoviev analyzes the real communist society (USSR) and its mechanisms of functioning. The book examines what constitutes normalcy and crisis (its causes, nature, and prospects) for such a society, and the interrelationship between them. The Soviet Union and the communist countries of Europe plunged into a deep global crisis. According to the author, this is the first specifically communist crisis in history. The book continues the release of the complete collection of works for the 100th anniversary of A.A. Zinoviev.
