This manual contains information about the evolution of the most important category of philological sciences, which at different periods of the history of philology was called either "qualities", then "conditions", then "virtues", and in our time it is called the "communicative qualities of speech". It is related to a variety of disciplines: the basics of philology (the definitions of verbal sciences were always given through "qualities" "" of speech), style, rhetoric, speech culture, etc. This category is considered from ancient theories, continuing with Russian classical textbooks of literature and rhythics and ending with modern theories of speech. A fundamentally new material is contained in the experimental dictionary of speech qualities (number of up to 300 units) with the initial articles "dictionary of speech qualities".
