The monograph is the first systematic description of the Aleut language spoken by the residents of Nikolskoye village on Bering Island (part of the Commander Islands group, Russia). Unlike another variety of the Aleut language that was prevalent on the neighboring Copper Island, the Bering dialect has not been as influenced by Russian. It has retained all the main features inherent to the Atka Island dialect (Aleutian Islands, USA), from which it separated approximately a century and a half ago. The authors pay special attention to the innovations found in the Bering dialect, as well as the archaic features that have been lost in the American variant. The Introduction provides general information about the Aleuts (distribution, self-designations, population) and the Aleut language (kinship relations, dialect composition, history of study). Today, the Aleut language in the Commander Islands is very close to complete disappearance. Therefore, the primary task of the book is to document and describe the vanishing language, which is part of the unique Aleut culture. At the same time, the authors attempt to present this invaluable material in a form that would be convenient for researchers working on general linguistic issues. For specialists in Eskimo-Aleut languages, other languages of Northern peoples, linguists dealing with linguistic typology, general phonetics, phonology, and grammar.
