1940. Italy is at war. After a serious injury, Salvatore Todaro refuses to leave the service and takes on the task of guiding a submarine with a team of young submariners from different parts of Italy through the Gibraltar Strait. When the 'Cappellini' encounters a Belgian cargo ship on its way, Todaro realizes that he must sink the enemy vessel, but the maritime law is above the Commander's military duty. Against the order to destroy the enemy, Todaro takes on board 26 surviving sailors to deliver them to shore. Thus, in a tiny enclosed space with shared hardships, hopes, and supplies, very different people find themselves locked up, who have long been told that they are enemies.
