The Isthmus is based on the archival records of the Foundation of the Finnish Literary Society, as well as on the memoirs of eyewitnesses about the tests experienced during the evacuation in Karelia, collected in 1997-1999. In 2016, the book was awarded the State Finland Prize in the field of comics
