In 1995, Joe Sakko went to the Balkans to collect evidence of eyewitnesses to the Bosnian war. He was one of the first journalists in the Muslim Enclave of Horage, besieged by Bosnian Serbs, and conducted dozens of interviews with residents locked in a trap that did not have access to the outside world, electricity and water supply. Their tragic stories serve as the best evidence of what is happening when politics is placed above human lives.
“Horage: Safety zone” is Magnum Opus Sakko, which allowed him to become one of the most famous journalists of America. In 2001, the book became the laureate of the Will Icener Award and was nominated for the Harvey Award. In addition, the Time magazine called the Gorzhde the best comic book 2000, and the New York Times included it in the 2001 main books list
