The book is dedicated to one of the most noticeable constructivist buildings of Yekaterinburg - the “Club of Builders” by the architect Jacob Cornfeld, known as the “Building of the Sverdlovsk Film Studio”.
Club is a new type of public building that has become widespread in large cities, which is rapidly developing in the countries of the 1930s and was of particular importance for Soviet ideology. Today, the clubs of the 1930s are the most interesting part of the architectural heritage of this time. Each of the buildings has its own amazing story and unique architecture.
This book of Lyudmila Tokmeninova reveals the story of the Sverdlovsk Club of Builders in the context of the entire club construction. The story begins with the project of the end of the 19th century of the People’s House in Chelyabinsk, passing through all the iconic buildings of this direction - the Textilers club in Sofrin, the Club of the Sickle and the Hammer plant on Volochaevskaya Street in Moscow, the Bureznikh shoe factory in Moscow, the architect Melnikov and others . The history of club construction in Sverdlovsk itself is considered: the district house of officers, the Kukhnya factory Uztm, the Railway Club of the Architect Babykin, the club named after Dzerzhinsky in the structure of the residential complex Gorodok of Chekists. The Club of Builders itself is presented in drawings, plans, historical and modern photographs of interiors and facades
