In this book, which, according to Jubera Damisch, was to serve as theoretical anticipation of the creation of a new, materialistic history of painting, the cloud is not subject to an iconographic study as an attribute and does not even become the subject of the theory designated in the title. As not the most important, not the most noticeable, but the indispensable element of the system of classical Western-European painting, the cloud provides the key to comprehending this system in its closedness, in its obvious limitations, from the point of view of which they become explained both the most famous achievements and its mechanisms are inexorably ultimate story
