From 1954 to 1967, a unique “school of one teacher”, which was created by the local priest Lorenzo Milani, worked in the deaf Italian village of Barbiana. He saw his pastoral duty primarily in giving children from peasant families an effective tool for the struggle for equality - knowledge of the language and the ability to state their thoughts. The brief result of his pedagogical activity was the “letter to the teacher” he wrote along with the students - the manifesto of what the school should be (and what should not) be.
