It is difficult to talk about Leonid Ivanovich Dobychin (1894-1936) without using sad and familiar expressions: 'tragic figure', 'unjustly condemned', 'disappeared', 'forgotten'. He was a modest statistician from the Bryansk Regional Statistics Bureau, preferring not to reveal his full name in print: 'Just 'L. Dobychin', not 'Leonid', as some scoundrels practice for unknown reasons.' The prose talent of Dobychin was especially believed in by Korney Chukovsky, who published his stories and helped him connect with other writers. After Dobychin's rise in Soviet literature, he faced harsh criticism for formalism: in 1936, the persecution of his first and only novel 'The City of En' began, which offended and hurt the author. Presumably, he took his own life immediately after the meeting on March 25 at the Leningrad House of Writers, 'departed to distant lands'.
