Vladimir Nabokov resisted reading his prose through the prism of sketches and drafts. However, the complex narrative structure of his works, their stylistic sophistication, and ontological multidimensionality can sometimes be revealed to the reader only through a comparison of the initial concept and the final version of the artistic texts, whether it be a novel, a short story, or an autobiographical narrative. "Cipher: Nabokov. Archive. Subtext" represents an experience of archival interpretation of his works from the late 1930s to the mid-1950s: the memoirs "Speak, Memory", the novels "Laughter in the Dark", "The Real Life of Sebastian Knight", and "Bend Sinister", and the stories "Ultima Thule", "The Vane Sisters", and "Lance" with the help of carefully hidden codes or "keys" found in Nabokov's manuscripts, diaries, and letters. The study includes the publication and analysis of the 1951 Diary, the author's rejected draft of the ending of the novel "Laughter in the Dark", an essay by V. E. Nabokov on the childhood of Dmitry, skillfully woven into the final chapter of her husband's autobiography, as well as a review of Nabokov's correspondence with "The New Yorker" editor Katharine White, shedding light on the mysteries of "Bend Sinister".
