Christmas stories were one of the most popular genres of Russian pre-revolutionary literature - every year numerous newspapers and magazines, like a gift for Christmas, published these simple stories. They were written by both unknown authors and recognized classics: Chekhov, Leskov, Dostoevsky, Nemirovich-Danchenko, Gnedich. In family circles, everyone, from young to old, would be captivated by the terrifying "bivouacs" about evil spirits and the kind tales about the help of Angels, stories about unfortunate orphans who end up at the Christmas tree in wealthy homes, and about treasures hidden in the walls of ancient houses...
At the heart of any Christmas story lies a reliance on Christian spiritual traditions. This genre, whose history dates back to the distant past of the Russian people, is permeated through and through with the warming light of goodness, warmth, and love, the joy of the Christmas holiday. The book calls for the revival of the forgotten tradition of family reading and will be interesting to both children and adults.
