Sir Arthur Conan-Dol for the first time publicly declared his faith in communication with the dead in the article, which appeared in the Light magazine of October 21, 1916. This statement for many sounded while thunder in the midst of a clear sky. But the first spiritualistic session, at which he was present, I must say, with a very skeptical mood, took place at the end of 1886, when Conan-Dyul was still beginning to practice a doctor. His interest in the mental phenomena was indicated a few years before this first experience. Probably, there is no person who would not read Conan-Dyul, but there is no person who would read all Conan-Dyul. This, with all the desire, is impossible even in England. It just so happened that most Russian readers, having heard the name of Conan-Dyul, joyfully note: “Ah, this is the author of the famous Sherlock Holmes!” Only. Thus, it turns out that almost the most important side of the spiritual life of the writer - his scientific and philosophical searches, his violent social activity - remains an unknown Russian -speaking reader. The same book reveals to the Russian reader a completely unknown side of the life and work of Arthur Conan-Dyul. On its pages, Conan-Dyul appears as a subtle thinker who is deeply worried about the fundamental problems of being: soul, immortality, God, religion, mental research, the progress of mankind, its fate and purpose.
